12.6. Project Object Model

A Project Object Model (POM) is the fundamental unit of work in Maven. It is an XML file that contains information about the project and configuration details used by Maven to build the project.

It contains configuration values that Maven uses, e.g.,

build directory, which is by default target;
the source directory, which is by default src/main/java;
the test source directory, which is by default src/test/java.

Some of the things that can be specified in the POM are:

the project's version, description, and developers,
the plugins or goals that can be executed,
the build profiles,
the project dependencies.

POM Types

A POM can inherit properties from a parent POM.

Super POM

Maven's default POM.
All POMs extend the Super POM unless explicitly set.

Effective POM

The complete POM after inheriting properties.
